| Physical Therapy is that branch of the medical sciences, which educates people about their anatomy and physiology, and improves the quality of their lives through improving their strength, mobility and functionality. The most common perception about Physical Therapy is that one sees a Physical Therapist when one is hurt or in pain from surgery. Though injuries through work and auto accidents as well as post-surgical rehabilitation make up the largest percentage of patients, this is actually not the only role of Physical Therapy. As with most preventative medicines, one should seek education first. In the case of nutrition, one reads books and practices healthy diets BEFORE they have complications, like diabetes or allergic reactions to food. In mental health, understanding stress and anxiety as well as having a personal practice like meditation or spiritual faith is essential to avoiding mental health problems. One could say that machinery and appliances work better and last longer when the operator has at least read the directions. Such is the case with Physical Therapy. Understanding your body, its strengths and weaknesses before it gets hurt can, in fact, reduce the chances of actual injury, especially work related injuries or stress related injuries from simple daily activities. Further, Physical Therapy can assist an individual to overcome difficulties they encounter in pursuing physical activities they enjoy. If one enjoyed sports or physical exercise when one was younger, but just can’t seem to get into it any more, or gives up each time one tries to start exercising a new, there may be an underlying musculoskeletal problem that Physical Therapy can address. Would you take your car to a mechanic only when it was broken? With proper diagnosis, Physical Therapy can help you keep your body fit and active for a lifetime. |
